Ascension: Return of the Fallen is a sixty-five-card stand-alone deck-building game for one or two players and an expansion that raises the original Ascension set to as many as six. Each player begins with a small deck of Apprentices and Militia, then plays an entire hand to generate Runes and Power. Runes recruit heroes and constructs from the changing center row; Power defeats monsters for immediate rewards and Honor. Acquired cards enter the discard pile and cycle back into later hands, so every purchase shapes the engine a player will draw. Constructs remain in play to build lasting faction combinations, while banishing weak cards can make a deck faster and more reliable. Return of the Fallen introduces Fate effects that trigger as soon as certain cards enter the center row, forcing both players to react to a world that can change between turns. The game ends when the shared Honor pool is exhausted, and earned Honor plus card values determine the winner. A solo variant provides a compact race against the Fallen, while combination rules preserve the full multiplayer Ascension experience.
